We are students of words: we are shut up in schools, and colleges, and recitation-rooms, for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bag of wind, a memory of words, and do not know a thing. Ralph Waldo Emerson

My kids talked us into taking them sledding this past week. They really committed us. I’ve been putting off all types of requests of this sort because of after-holiday busy-ness. So we’ve basically been relying on family fun outside of our own making.
As we drove up the canyon, I became very glad we had gotten off our duffs and made it a priority to bond with our kids. The scenery was spectacular!
There were huge icicles off the side of the road. I was snapping shots as best I could as Mike zoomed by. And I couldn’t do it with the window open or I would have frozen everybody.
These took my breath away,
along with the towering views.
Up the canyon we arrived at our sledding destination. Here Raquel is holding a sled that I DON’T recommend using if you’re an adult. It has no cushion and jolts you every time you hit a bump. I made the mistake of going down on one with my kids, and my tailbone was sore for a week (thank goodness for muscle relief oil)!
The little kids (especially Lily) were so adorable all bundled up and snowy.
Here Nathan has a sled I used to go down the hill head-first, yes it’s true. After Nathan used some heavy persuasion to get me to try it, I loved it! The body of this sled is lifted sightly off the ground so I didn’t feel every bump, it didn’t go too fast, and the front is movable so I could steer.
This is my latest sled purchase, the Zipfy. It’s exhilirating! It’s got cushioning, goes fast when you keep your legs up, but is easy to control with feet to slow down or change direction. What a winner!
I had my video camera in my pocket, so I decided to run it as I was going down the hill, just for fun. I took one jump that put me so high in the air, I’m amazed I stayed on!
After enjoying some hot cocoa I had brought with us, we headed back down the mountain seeing some interesting sights as we did. Our little ones squealed with excitement when they saw this big snow plow passing by,
and these wild turkeys.
I made Mike pull over so I could get a clear shot of this baby.
One of my favorite things about living in Cedar City is seeing the red rock peeking out from underneath snow in the winter.
I can’t help but praise the Creator for beauty such as this and days like today.
We love the Christmas season and the opportunity to receive and share photos and letters with loving friends and remember our Savior. This year, we turned the letter writing over to, ME! Raquel.
Mike had to make a decision. He finally got to the point where he didn’t want his retirement savings going to support Wall Street banking.
After moving to Cedar City and discovering George Wythe College, Mike took a class in political economy. He started reading classics on economics such as Economic Harmonies written in the 1850’s by French economist Fredrick Bastiat and Wealth of Nations written in 1776 by Scottish philosopher Adam Smith.
His paradigm was totally altered, and he began thinking the difference between wealth and prosperity: wealth is accumulated and concentrates, whereas prosperity is used and spreads. I pondered this too, as he shared all his thoughts with me.
Mike was stewing at last year’s bailouts of wall street CEOs and big business at the tax payers’ expense. He even wrote a post about it. We had many discussions about different models of business. We came to the understanding that when profit is the only goal of a company- usually any means, fair or foul will be used to accomplish that end. Business is almost always end driven.
Bailout Spoof, starring our 3 youngest, Joel, Lily and Seth. I couldn’t resist sharing this while we’re on the topic. We’ve laughed over it so many times! (There’s a tiny iffy part, so don’t watch if you’re easily offended.)
The first day we spent in Boston was with my cousin, Lisa and her family.
The Boyce Family on the Old North Bridge in Concord
They were so awesome to us! As they drove us all over the place that day, they informed us, that for a couple hours of the afternoon their children were going to prepare the dinner for all of us. Of course, I was immediately intrigued.
Lisa told me that a couple years previous, her husband had expressed the desire to have company for dinner on Sunday nights. With him traveling often, she responded that if it were going to happen, the kids would need to do the dinner, and he would need to clean up. Like me, Lisa also has 6 kids, and knew she couldn’t run the whole show herself 7 days a week with no break. So they started this tradition of their kids all making the dinner each Sunday.
I just got an email from Jim Matheson, my representative for the 2nd District of Utah. I really like the way he communicates with his constituents.
He does public, town meetings with a large number of people over the phone. He asks what our concerns are, and tries to respond to them. He sends out surveys by email and asks for feedback.
And boy do I give him feedback. He’s concerned about people having access to “quality” healthcare. Well, who determines what is quality? The American Medical Association? The pharmaceutical industry? Doctors? Most of these folks are financially vested in keeping the current system mostly the way it is. Read more…
When I married, I took birth control pills. I was naive. I didn’t realize how they altered the natural processes of my body and also produced undesirable side effects.
I stopped taking the pill after a couple years when I wanted to start having children. There were 3 years between our 2nd & 3rd children when I couldn’t get pregnant, though we were trying. So I haven’t need much for prevention until this year.
My last baby, Joel, was born in May of 2008. It was a difficult delivery. He was my heaviest baby, weighing over 8 pounds (big for me). I knew I either needed to call it quits after this one, or at least take a break for a while.
My cheap Walmart stools haven’t been holding up to the wear and tear of a large family. I bought them a few years ago, and I was glad I bought extras. One by one, their screws wouldn’t stay in anymore, or they would break somehow.
When one bit the dust, we’d get out a new one. Twice, a leg fell off, and the stool fell, gouging a hole in our wood floor. I was ready for a new set, but just didn’t want more cheap stuff. Plus I knew that quality stools can be pricey.
Recently, we noticed our favorite furniture store was going out of business. It was the kind of place that sells real wood, and they stain it the color you want. It’s expensive stuff, but nothing else compares when you need it to endure the rough use from a bunch of kids. Read more…
My sister, Emili, invited me to a meeting a few months ago, to learn about a new company selling essential oils. Just the previous month, I had dropped a wad buying oils from Vickie for my emergency preparedness cabinet.
Essential oils have a pretty long shelf life if they are protected from heat, oxygen and light. So I figured it would be a good investment. With the economy the way it is, I wanted to be prepared with effective tools with which to care for my family. Read more…
